Gukesh Donmaraj, an 18-year-old chess prodigy from India, has defeated China’s Ding Liren to become the new world chess champion.

Born in 2006, Don Maraju is the youngest world champion in history, the previous record held by Garry Kasparov, who became world champion in 1985 at the age of 22.

On Thursday in Singapore, Donmaraju secured victory after a close match between the two grandmasters that appeared to be on the verge of a draw.

International Chess Federation President Arkady Dvorkovich said, “Ding’s first choice was expected, but Gukesh played a variation that no one expected.”

The federation said most of the gameplay between the two sides was of “almost perfect precision” and set the stage for a draw.

However, when trying to force a draw, Rylen made a critical mistake.

“When I realized I had made a huge mistake, I was in complete shock,” Ding said in the post-match press conference of his decision to sacrifice one of Don Maraju’s rooks to capture one. .

“I think we played probably the best tournament of the year. We could have played a better match, but considering how lucky we were yesterday (to survive), it was no surprise that we lost in the end. I have no regrets.” said Ding.

In the final moments of the match, you can see the exact moment Donmaraju realizes he has the key to victory. A cautious smile crept onto his face and he momentarily left the table to breathe, clutching his chest.

Returning to the table, Din makes one final move, shaking Donmaraju’s hand and admitting defeat.

The teenager covered his face and cried with joy, barely managing to shake the hands of those who had gathered to congratulate him.

Donmaraju said he initially couldn’t believe his luck that the 32-year-old chess champion had been involved in his defeat.

“Ever since I started playing chess…for more than 10 years, I have dreamed of living in this moment,” Donmaraju said at a press conference. “Every chess player wants to experience this moment, but very few get the chance.”

However, Donmaraju expressed deep respect for Ding and hailed the Chinese player as a legend in the sports world.

“Everyone knows what kind of player Ding is. He’s been one of the best players in history for the past few years,” Donmaraju said, acknowledging Ding’s struggles in recent matches. “The amount of pressure he had to face and the fight he gave in this fight shows what a true champion he is.”
