Earth Day 55: Activists Rally Against Trump’s Climate Policies

As the 55th annual Earth Day is commemorated, environmental advocates are united in their call to challenge the aggressive climate policies of President Donald Trump and his wealthy supporters. This initiative comes alongside concerns about potential federal measures that may further hinder environmental progress.

Trump’s Environmental Actions

Since taking office, President Trump has implemented a series of executive orders favoring the fossil fuel industry, including oil, gas, and coal. His administration’s appointments have included Cabinet members linked to these sectors, raising alarms among environmentalists. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under Trump’s leadership, has embarked on sweeping deregulatory actions and enacted significant budget cuts to federal bodies focused on climate and environmental issues such as the EPA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

A Call to Action from Youth Leaders

Aru Shiney-Ajay, executive director of the youth-led Sunrise Movement, emphasizes the significance of Earth Day as a platform for resistance. Shiney-Ajay stated, “We are ready to fight for our future with everything we’ve got. Our generation will not sit back while Trump and fossil fuel billionaires destroy our home. We will not cooperate with the destruction of our world.”

Potential Threats to Environmental Organizations

In addition to existing rollbacks, reports suggest that the Trump administration may consider revoking the tax-exempt status of various environmental groups. Such a shift would impede the fundraising abilities of these organizations, as they rely on tax-deductible donations. Speculation points to an announcement coinciding with Earth Day, further raising concerns among activist circles.

The Consequences of Policy Changes

Ashley Nunes, a public lands policy specialist at the Center for Biological Diversity, voiced her concerns in an editorial piece, highlighting how Trump’s administration prioritizes the interests of affluent allies over the public’s environmental welfare. Nunes pointed out, “Trump has worked quickly to pursue an agenda that puts the profits of his billionaire allies above the well-being of the American people and our environment.”

Activism on Earth Day

Protests are taking place across the nation, reflecting a growing anti-billionaire sentiment. One notable event involves the climate group Planet Over Profit, which plans to protest at the New York residence of James Murdoch, son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and a Tesla board member. The group criticizes Tesla, founded by Trump’s advisor Elon Musk, for its environmental record, stating, “Tesla ranks fifth among companies producing toxic air pollution in the country.”

Broader Movements for Justice

The convergence of environmental and social justice efforts was evident in a recent march in New York City, where thousands rallied under the shared causes of climate justice and migrant rights. The march highlighted how Trump’s administration’s environmental policies further exacerbate climate change and forced migration issues.

Mobilization and Accountability

Earth Day mobilizations are gaining momentum, with organizers adopting the slogan “All Out on Earth Day.” EarthDay.org, the global coordinator for Earth Day activities, is actively promoting events globally. Susan Bass, senior vice president of programs and operations at EarthDay.org, stated, “We need to demonstrate to our leaders in government and business that we are still here, we are a witness to their actions, and we will hold them accountable to do right by our planet and its people.”
