Latonya Reeves has spent her career advocating for transparency, justice, and effective leadership within Minnesota’s communities.

Latonya Reeves’ journey has been defined by her commitment to public service, accountability, and community-focused leadership. From her long-standing career as a probation and parole officer to her work as a union leader, Reeves has always prioritized the needs of people and has built a legacy rooted in service and integrity. Her experience has shaped her approach to leadership, one that emphasizes fairness, transparency, and tangible results for every resident of Minnesota’s 5th District.

A Career Built on Accountability and Service

With more than 20 years of experience in public safety and criminal justice reform, Reeves has a proven track record of holding systems accountable and ensuring public resources are used responsibly. Throughout her career, she has worked directly with those affected by the criminal justice system, focusing on providing meaningful support to youth, seniors, and vulnerable communities.

As President of AFSCME Council 5 Local 552, Reeves advocated for the rights of working families, ensuring that public services were not only effective but accessible. Her leadership within the union allowed her to fight for fair treatment, the protection of worker rights, and the responsible allocation of public resources. “When we fail to properly allocate resources, it’s the most vulnerable who suffer,” Reeves says. “We must ensure that the systems in place serve everyone fairly and effectively.”

Ensuring Proper Oversight and Fighting Fraud

Reeves’ commitment to transparency and effective government is a key focus of her work. Over the years, she has observed firsthand how the mismanagement of public funds can impact essential services, such as housing programs and disability support. “When programs fail or funds are misused, it’s not just the system that breaks, it’s people’s lives that are disrupted,” she explains.

Throughout her career, Reeves has been a vocal advocate for stronger oversight and accountability within government programs. She believes that public funds must be used efficiently and that there should be rigorous safeguards in place to protect vulnerable populations. “We must ensure that every dollar is spent where it’s most needed, and that services are actually reaching the people they are intended to help,” she says.

A Vision for Inclusive Leadership

Reeves’ approach to leadership is grounded in inclusivity and a deep respect for all communities. She believes that every neighborhood, regardless of its size, political makeup, or socioeconomic status, deserves to be heard and represented. This belief has guided her work on the Minneapolis Civil Rights Commission, the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission, and various other local and state commissions.

“We need leadership that listens to the people, takes action, and ensures that everyone has a seat at the table,” she says. Reeves’ ability to work across political lines and unite people around shared goals has been a hallmark of her leadership. Whether working with labor unions, civil rights organizations, or local governments, Reeves has always prioritized finding solutions that benefit the entire community.

“I’ve worked hard to make sure everyone, no matter their background, has a voice in the process. Whether it’s through union negotiations or working on community commissions, I’ve always aimed to create policies that are inclusive and fair,” she says.

Proven Leadership with Real Results

Reeves’ leadership is built on a foundation of results. From her work as a probation officer to her role in union leadership, she has consistently delivered outcomes that benefit the communities she serves. Her approach focuses on listening to people’s concerns, identifying the root causes of problems, and working collaboratively to find long-lasting solutions.

As a member of various commissions, she has helped implement policies aimed at reforming public safety and improving government accountability. “It’s important to me that when we enact policy, it’s not just about making headlines, it’s about delivering real outcomes that improve people’s lives,” Reeves says.

Strengthening Community Connections

Throughout her career, Reeves has always believed in the power of community. By working directly with local organizations, civic groups, and individuals, she has built strong relationships with the people she serves. Her ability to connect with people and understand their needs has allowed her to be an effective leader and advocate for change.

“Strong communities are built on trust and cooperation. We need to be able to listen to each other, work together, and make sure that the systems we build serve everyone,” Reeves emphasizes.

Reeves has worked diligently to ensure that community voices are heard and that decisions are made with the people’s best interests at heart. Her leadership style reflects her dedication to service and her belief that real change happens when we come together as a community.
