UN Declares 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science & Technology

On August 3, 2025, celebrations were held across the United States to mark the United Nations’ official designation of 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. This global initiative, which was formally proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in June 2024, has been endorsed by more than 70 countries, highlighting the increasing recognition of quantum research as a cornerstone of future innovation and development.

The declaration aligns with the 100th anniversary of key theoretical breakthroughs in quantum mechanics, including Werner Heisenberg’s formulation of matrix mechanics and Erwin Schrödinger’s wave equation. These foundational discoveries continue to shape fields as diverse as computing, chemistry, and communications. By honoring this centenary, the UN aims to inspire reflection on the field’s profound impact while galvanizing public and institutional support for its future.

UNESCO is leading the coordination of the year-long initiative, working alongside a global steering committee that includes top scientific societies such as the American Physical Society, the Institute of Physics, and Optica. The campaign’s focus includes raising awareness, encouraging science education, and stimulating collaboration between academia, industry, and government sectors.

In the United States, a nationwide series of educational campaigns, exhibitions, and science events is being rolled out throughout the year. These include university-led workshops, museum displays, and public lectures aimed at demystifying quantum science for broader audiences. A major public push is also underway to engage students and educators, with special emphasis on reaching underrepresented communities in STEM.

Internationally, signature events are being held in locations historically connected to quantum science, such as Heligoland in Germany, where Heisenberg’s theoretical work was first developed. UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris hosted the formal opening ceremony earlier in February, drawing leading scientists, Nobel laureates, and policymakers to celebrate the occasion and set the tone for the year ahead.

Quantum science, once a niche academic discipline, now plays a critical role in emerging technologies. It underpins developments in quantum computing, cryptography, secure communications, materials discovery, and precision sensing—sectors that are expected to define the next technological era. Public and private investment in quantum technologies has surged globally, and the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology aims to ensure that these advances are widely understood and equitably shared.

Events such as World Quantum Day, held annually around April 14, are taking on enhanced visibility in 2025. These observances are bringing together researchers, artists, educators, and entrepreneurs to explore the interdisciplinary potential of quantum technologies. The IYQ also supports open access initiatives and educational resources to help bridge knowledge gaps between countries and sectors.

Major technology firms and startups, including leaders in the quantum computing space, are participating through competitions, mentorship programs, and public exhibitions. These partnerships are intended to foster the development of a more diverse quantum workforce while promoting innovation ecosystems that support sustainable development goals.

By officially recognizing 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the United Nations has positioned quantum research at the heart of global cooperation and progress. The initiative not only celebrates a century of scientific achievement but also looks ahead to a future where quantum-enabled tools and ideas play a central role in solving complex global challenges.
