Commencement Speeches Reflect Growing Tensions Between Academia and Federal Government

The 2025 graduation season across the United States has transformed into a platform for political expression, underscoring the escalating tensions between higher education institutions and the federal government. Commencement ceremonies, traditionally celebratory events, have become arenas where speakers address concerns over academic freedom, political interference, and the role of universities in a polarized society.

At Wake Forest University, CBS News correspondent Scott Pelley delivered a poignant address, warning graduates about the perceived threats to democratic institutions. He emphasized that journalism, universities, and freedom of speech are “under attack,” urging the Class of 2025 to actively defend these pillars of democracy. Pelley’s remarks resonated with many, highlighting the broader concerns about the erosion of civil liberties and the importance of civic engagement.

Similarly, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, speaking at another commencement, criticized recent federal actions that he viewed as undermining educational integrity and free speech. He called upon graduates to uphold democratic values and to be vigilant against policies that threaten the foundational principles of academia.

Harvard University’s commencement was notably marked by its ongoing legal battle with the Trump administration. The federal government had attempted to revoke Harvard’s certification to enroll international students, citing unverified claims of fostering anti-American behavior. This move prompted a federal judge to issue a temporary restraining order, allowing the university to continue its international programs. During the ceremony, Harvard President Alan Garber received a standing ovation after subtly criticizing the administration’s policies and reaffirming the university’s commitment to global diversity. Yurong “Luanna” Jiang, a Chinese student, delivered a heartfelt speech emphasizing the importance of international collaboration and understanding, further highlighting the university’s stance against political interference.

In contrast to the politically charged speeches, cultural figures like Elizabeth Banks, Usher, and Kermit the Frog offered more uplifting messages. Kermit the Frog, addressing graduates at the University of Maryland, encouraged students to “find your people,” “take the leap,” and “make connections,” promoting unity and perseverance amidst challenging times. His speech, while lighthearted, subtly acknowledged the complexities of entering the real world during a period of political and social unrest.

These commencement addresses have drawn sharp reactions from conservative commentators and government agencies, further intensifying the debate over the role of politics in academia. While some view these speeches as essential calls to defend democratic values, others question their broader influence given the polarized sociopolitical climate. Nonetheless, the 2025 commencement season reflects the deep national divisions and the complexities faced by higher education institutions during a politically tumultuous time.

As universities continue to navigate these challenges, the voices heard during commencement ceremonies underscore the enduring importance of academic freedom, the defense of democratic principles, and the role of education in shaping an informed and engaged citizenry.
