DETROIT — The city of Detroit is commemorating Juneteenth 2025 with a vibrant array of events that honor African American history, culture, and the enduring pursuit of freedom. Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their emancipation—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
Charles H. Wright Museum Leads the Commemoration
At the forefront of the celebrations is the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, hosting a full day of programming on June 19. The event begins with a keynote address by Neil A. Barclay, President and CEO of the museum, followed by reflections from Jamon Jordan, Detroit’s official historian, providing historical context on Juneteenth’s significance. Activities include a “Journey to Freedom” treasure hunt, silent disco yoga sessions, art workshops focusing on healing and unity, and a screening of the documentary “Clotilda: Last American Slave Ship.” The museum also offers outdoor festivities such as horseback riding, chalk art, and a dance tribute honoring ancestors. The day concludes with a community cookout celebrating Black culinary traditions .
