On June 2, 2025, the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at New York University hosted its annual McSilver Awards, recognizing nine individuals as Vanguards for Social Justice. The event, held at NYU’s Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life, celebrated leaders who have made significant contributions to advancing equity and addressing systemic inequalities.
Among the honorees was Dr. Lisette Nieves, President of the Fund for the City of New York (FCNY), acknowledged for her leadership and dedication to creating lasting change for New Yorkers and beyond. Nathaniel M. Fields, Chief Executive Officer of the Urban Resource Institute (URI), was recognized for his work in providing comprehensive services for survivors of domestic violence. Mara Gay, a member of the New York Times Editorial Board and MSNBC analyst, was honored for her contributions to public discourse on social justice issues. Hon. Ronald E. Richter, CEO and Executive Director of JCCA, was celebrated for his efforts in child welfare and family services.
The ceremony also highlighted five policymakers as Champions for Black Maternal Health:

The McSilver Awards, established in 2013, aim to honor individuals who are transforming systems to address the needs of individuals, families, and communities living in poverty, both locally and globally. Past recipients include notable figures such as Yamiche Alcindor, Tarana Burke, Jelani Cobb, and Nikole Hannah-Jones.
The 2025 ceremony underscored the importance of continued advocacy and the impact of dedicated individuals in driving societal progress. By recognizing these leaders, the McSilver Institute highlights the ongoing efforts to address systemic inequalities and promote inclusive policies.
