Manistee Celebrates Pride Month with Art Exhibition and Drag Show

by Democrat Digest Team

Manistee, Michigan — The city of Manistee has launched its Pride Month celebrations with a vibrant array of events aimed at honoring and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Spearheaded by the Manistee Area Racial Justice and Diversity Initiative (MARJDI) and PFLAG Manistee, the festivities commenced with the “Art Speaks Pride” exhibition at the Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts and will continue with a Pride Celebration Drag Show on June 7.

The “Art Speaks Pride” exhibition, which opened on May 30, showcases works from LGBTQ+ artists across Michigan, reflecting diverse experiences and themes within the community. Hosted in the historic Hardy Hall Gallery of the Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts, the exhibition is open to the public daily from noon to 3 p.m. through July 6. An artist reception held on May 31 featured live music by local musician Kit Holmes, providing attendees an opportunity to engage directly with the artists and discuss the inspirations behind their works.

“Pride Month is an opportunity to honor the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals and advocate for equal rights,” said Jamie Thompson, a coordinator for the initiative. “Events like these foster inclusivity and support within our community.”

The celebrations will continue with Moxy’s Pride Celebration Drag Show on June 7 at 7 p.m., also at the Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts. Presented by the Haus of Moxy, the event promises an evening of dynamic performances. While admission is free, tickets are required and can be obtained through the Ramsdell Theatre’s website. Donations collected during the event will support the performers.

These events are part of a broader effort by MARJDI and PFLAG Manistee to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the community. MARJDI, established in 2019, focuses on fostering a more racially just and welcoming environment in Manistee, while PFLAG Manistee provides support, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.

The Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts, a cultural hub in West Michigan, serves as a fitting venue for these celebrations. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the center has a rich history of hosting diverse artistic and cultural events, contributing to Manistee’s vibrant community life.

As Pride Month progresses, Manistee’s commitment to celebrating and supporting its LGBTQ+ residents is evident through these inclusive and engaging events. Community members are encouraged to participate and show their support for diversity and equality.
